Step 1. Protonephridia are a primitive type of excretory structure found in animals such as flatworms (Platyhelminthes, e.g. tapeworms, via ciliated flame cells) and Amphioxus (via flagellated solenocytes). They are blind-ended internally - they have no internal opening into a body cavity - and instead draw fluid directly through specialised cells before it drains out through external pores.
