Breakdown (catabolism) of proteins/amino acids produces nitrogenous waste products — mainly ammonia, urea, uric acid, and creatinine — which the body excretes via the kidneys.

When proteins are broken down, the amino group removed from amino acids (by deamination) is converted into various excretory nitrogenous compounds, depending on the organism and pathway:

  • Ammonia (NH3): the first, most toxic waste formed directly from deamination of amino acids; highly soluble, requires large amounts of water to excrete safely (as in ammonotelic animals, e.g., many aquatic animals).
  • Urea: formed in the liver from ammonia via the ornithine (urea) cycle; less toxic than ammonia and needs less water, the main nitrogenous waste in humans (ureotelic).
  • Uric acid: a semi-solid, largely non-toxic nitrogenous waste, characteristic of uricotelic animals (e.g., birds, reptiles, insects), that conserves water. …
