Flame cells are the basic excretory units (protonephridia) of flatworms, each containing a cluster of cilia whose flickering motion resembles a flame and which draws fluid/waste into a system of excretory tubules.

In simple, soft-bodied invertebrates like Platyhelminthes (flatworms, e.g., Planaria), excretion and osmoregulation are carried out by a network of branching tubules called protonephridia, which run throughout the body. At the closed, blind end of each tubule sits a hollow, bulb-shaped cell called a flame cell.

Each flame cell contains a tuft of long cilia projecting into the hollow lumen of the cell. The continuous beating of this ciliary tuft looks like a flickering flame under the microscope, which is how the cell gets its name. This ciliary beating creates a current that draws interstitial fluid, water, and metabolic wastes (mainly ammonia, in these ammonotelic animals) from the surrounding tissue into the flame cell, from where it is driven along the tubule system and eventually expelled from the body through pores called nephridiopores on the body sur …
