Renal failure is the loss of the kidney's ability to excrete metabolic wastes, and it shows up as an accumulation of urea in the blood together with a marked drop in urine output. It comes in two forms with very different outlooks. In acute renal failure, kidney function stops abruptly - often triggered by a sudden event such as severe blood loss, poisoning or obstruction - but there is a real chance of the kidneys recovering their function afterwards if the underlying cause is treated in time.
