The hypothalamus, a small region at the base of the forebrain, houses the thermoregulatory centre that controls and maintains normal body temperature.

The hypothalamus is a vital coordinating centre of the brain that links the nervous system to the endocrine system (via the pituitary gland) and regulates many homeostatic activities. Among its functions, it contains a specific thermoregulatory centre that continuously monitors blood temperature and, together with peripheral thermoreceptors in the skin, triggers responses to keep body temperature constant — such as inducing sweating and vasodilation when the body is too warm, or shivering (increased muscular activity) and vasoconstriction when the body is too cold.
