The limbic system is termed the "emotional brain" because its interconnected structures — chiefly the hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus — control emotional behaviour, motivation, and the link between emotion and memory.

The limbic system is a group of deep forebrain structures, forming a border ("limbus" means border/edge) around the central core of the brain, that work together to regulate emotional experience and behaviour. It is called the emotional brain because it is the region primarily responsible for generating and processing emotions such as fear, anger, pleasure, and motivation, and for driving associated behavioural and physiological (autonomic) responses to those emotions — for example, a racing heart and sweating triggered by fear. It is also closely tied to the formation of emotional memories, which is why strongly emotional events tend to be remembered vividly.

Its main component parts include:

  • Hippocampus — essential for forming new long-term memories and for spatial memory, and works closely with emotional centres so that memories often carry an emotional "tag".

  • Amygdala — the key centre for processing fear and other strong emotions, and for emotional memory (learning to associate a stimulus with danger or reward).
