Introduction

In a multicellular organism, cells do not operate independently — instead they specialise and cooperate, forming tight communities that live and work together for the benefit of the whole body.

3.1

Animal Tissues

Animal tissues are classified according to the size, shape and function of their cells. There are four primary (basic) tissue types that interweave to form the 'fabric' of the body: epithelial tissue…

3.2

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissue is essentially a sheet of tightly packed cells with very little material between them.

3.3

Connective Tissue

Connective tissue develops from the embryonic mesoderm and, true to its name, is the most widely distributed tissue in the body — it is what physically connects and supports every other tissue type.

3.4

Muscle Tissue

Muscle tissue is built from many long, cylindrical fibres arranged in parallel arrays; each fibre is itself made of numerous fine myofibrils.

3.5

Neural Tissue

Nervous (neural) tissue exerts the greatest degree of control over how the body responds to changing internal and external conditions — it is the tissue of communication and coordination.

EVALUATION

This Evaluation section checks understanding across all four primary animal tissue types covered in the chapter — epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue — through a mix of objective-type…
