Epithelial tissue, which covers body surfaces and lines cavities/organs, performs protection, secretion, absorption and excretion, among other roles.

Epithelial tissue is one of the four basic animal tissue types, made of tightly packed cells forming continuous sheets with little intercellular matrix. Because it covers external surfaces and lines internal cavities, ducts and tubes, it performs several important functions:

  1. Protection: stratified squamous epithelium of the skin protects underlying tissues from mechanical injury, abrasion, dehydration, chemical damage and pathogen entry.
  2. Secretion: glandular epithelium (e.g., in salivary glands, sweat glands, and the lining of the stomach) is specialised to synthesise and release substances such as enzymes, mucus and hormones.
