Elastic fibres are individual stretchy protein strands found scattered within various connective tissues, whereas elastic connective tissue is a distinct type of tissue made up almost entirely of densely packed elastic fibres.

Elastic fibres:

  • These are thin, branching fibres made of the protein elastin (along with some fibrillin), found as one component WITHIN loose or dense connective tissue, alongside other fibres like collagen fibres and cells like fibroblasts.
  • They can stretch to about 1.5 times their length and then recoil back to their original shape, giving the tissue they are part of some elasticity and resilience.
  • Example: elastic fibres are found scattered in the dermis of the skin and in areolar (loose) connective tissue.

Elastic connective tissue:

  • This is an entire, specialised type of dense connective tissue in which elastic fibres are the dominant, densely packed component, often arranged in parallel bundles or sheets, with relatively few cells and little other matrix.
  • Because elastic fibres dominate the whole tissue, elastic connective tissue as a whole is highly extensible and can recoil after being stretched, which is essential in structures that repeatedly expand and contract. …
