Cuboidal epithelium is a versatile lining tissue whose cube-shaped cells carry out both secretion and absorption, depending on location.

Cuboidal epithelium consists of a single layer of cube-shaped cells, typically found lining structures such as the proximal and distal convoluted tubules of the kidney nephron, the ducts of glands (salivary glands, pancreas), and the follicles of the thyroid gland. In the kidney tubules, the cuboidal cells are specialised for absorption — they reabsorb useful substances such as glucose, amino acids, ions, and water from the filtrate back into the blood, often aided by microvilli that increase their surface area.
