Earthworm casts are nutrient-rich faecal pellets of digested soil and organic matter that earthworms deposit at the soil surface or in burrows, improving soil fertility.

Earthworms feed by ingesting large amounts of soil along with decaying organic matter (leaf litter, humus). As this material passes through their digestive tract, it is finely ground and partly digested with the help of gut microorganisms.

The undigested residue, mixed with mucus and metabolic waste, is egested (voided) as small, granular pellets called earthworm casts — often deposited at burrow openings on the soil surface, especially visible after rain.
