Probiotics are live microorganisms that are beneficial to health when consumed in adequate amounts, while pathogenic bacteria are disease-causing organisms that harm the host — the two are essentially opposite in their effect on the body.

Probiotics: these are live, "friendly" microorganisms — most commonly bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species — that, when consumed in sufficient amounts (through fermented foods like curd/yogurt, or as dietary supplements), confer a health benefit on the host. They help maintain a healthy balance of gut flora, aid in digestion and nutrient absorption, help synthesise certain vitamins (like some B vitamins and vitamin K), compete with and suppress harmful microbes in the gut, and help strengthen the immune system. They do not damage host tissue or cause disease under normal conditions.
