Cadmium is removed from contaminated soil by phytoextraction, in which hyperaccumulator plants absorb the metal through their roots and concentrate it in their shoots for safe removal.

Phytoremediation is the use of living plants to remove, degrade or contain pollutants (including heavy metals) from contaminated soil, water or air. For a heavy metal such as cadmium, the specific technique used is phytoextraction: certain plant species, called hyperaccumulators, are able to absorb cadmium from the soil through their root system and translocate it upward, concentrating it in their above-ground shoot tissue, often at levels many times higher than in the surrounding soil.
