A seed ball is a small, dried pellet of soil, compost and seeds that is broadcast onto land and germinates by itself with the rains, without ploughing or manual sowing.

Seed balls (also called seed bombs) are a simple, low-cost method for revegetating waste, degraded, or hard-to-access land, popularised as part of guerrilla-gardening and afforestation efforts. The preparation steps are:

  1. Take good garden soil or clay-rich red earth and mix it thoroughly with well-decomposed compost/organic manure in roughly equal parts, to supply both structure and nutrients.
  2. Add a small amount of water gradually and knead the mixture into a moist, cohesive, dough-like paste (not too wet, or it will not hold shape).
  3. Take a small portion of this paste, place a few viable seeds of a hardy, locally-adapted plant species at its centre, and roll it by hand into a small, compact, round ball with the seeds fully enclosed inside.
  4. Dry the formed balls thoroughly in a shaded, well-ventilated place for one to two days, until they harden enough to be handled and stored without breaking. …
