Working
Bioremediation is a biotechnological approach to environmental clean-up that uses living organisms -- most commonly bacteria and fungi, but also plants (in the related process of phytoremediation) -- to degrade, detoxify, or remove harmful pollutants from contaminated soil, water, or air. The organisms used typically metabolise the pollutant as a source of carbon or energy, breaking it down through their normal metabolic pathways into simpler, less toxic, or completely harmless end-products (such as carbon dioxide and water), so that the contaminated site is progressively restored without physically removing and disposing of the polluted material elsewhere.
