Synthetic seeds are produced by encapsulating somatic embryos, or other tissue-cultured propagules such as shoot buds, generated in vitro from a single elite genotype, within a protective, nutrient-containing gel coat, commonly sodium/calcium alginate. This encapsulated unit can be handled and sown much like a natural seed, allowing rapid, large-scale, true-to-type clonal propagation of elite or hybrid plants, including species that produce recalcitrant or no natural seed, while bypassing the genetic variability of sexual reproduction.
