Somatic embryogenesis is used for clonal mass propagation, synthetic seed production, germplasm conservation, and rapid multiplication of rare species.

Somatic embryogenesis is the process by which somatic (non-reproductive) cells, usually from a callus or cell suspension culture, develop into bipolar embryo-like structures called somatic embryos (embryoids), which can germinate into whole plantlets just like a zygotic (seed) embryo. Its main applications are:

  1. Mass clonal propagation: because each somatic embryo can develop into a genetically identical plantlet, the technique allows large-scale, rapid multiplication of genetically superior or elite plant varieties, maintaining true-to-type uniformity.

  2. Synthetic seed (synseed) production: somatic embryos can be encapsulated in a protective gel/coating (often containing nutrients) to produce artificial or synthetic seeds, which can be handled, stored and sown much like natural seeds, and are especially useful for propagating plants that do not produce seeds normally or produce hybrid seed that is expensive to make each generation.

  3. Germplasm conservation: somatic embryos are well suited to long-term storage techniques such as cryopreservation (storage in liquid nitrogen), providing a means of conserving valuable or endangered plant genetic material for the future.
