Silicones are used: (i) as water-proofing agents — coated on fabrics, paper, and wood to make them water-repellent, since silicones repel water while allowing air/moisture vapour through;
(ii) as electrical insulators, in electrical equipment and switches, because of their good dielectric strength and stability at high temperature;
