Figure — Lewis/structural electron-dot formula of orthophosphoric acid H3PO4. Central phosphorus DOUBLE-bonde
Figure — Lewis/structural electron-dot formula of orthophosphoric acid H3PO4. Central phosphorus DOUBLE-bonde

Orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4H_3PO_4) has three P–OH groups, all of whose hydrogens are ionizable, making it a triprotic (tribasic) acid — unlike phosphorous acid (H3PO3H_3PO_3), which has only two ionizable H atoms since one H is bonded directly to P.

Identification: Among the common oxyacids of phosphorus, basicity (the number of ionizable H atoms) equals the number of −OH-OH groups directly attached to P — an H bonded directly to P (a P–H bond) is NOT ionizable. Orthophosphoric acid, H3PO4H_3PO_4, has three P–OH groups and no P–H bond, so all 3 hydrogens are ionizable — it is triprotic (tribasic).

(By contrast, orthophosphorous acid H3PO3H_3PO_3 has only 2 P–OH groups and one direct P–H bond, so despite its formula showing 3 hydrogens it is diprotic — it is NOT the answer here.)

The central P atom is bonded to:

  • one O atom by a double bond (P=OP=O) …
