Q.A 1212 metre tall tree was broken into two parts. It was found that the height of the part which was left standing was the cube root of the length of the part that was cut away. Formulate this into a mathematical problem to find the height of the part which was left standing.

Step 1. Name the unknown. Let hh = the height of the part left standing (metres). Since the tree was 1212 m tall, the cut-away part has length 12−h12-h.

Step 2. Translate the given condition. "The standing height was the cube root of the cut-away length": h=12−h3h=\sqrt[3]{12-h}.
