Mass defect is the mass 'missing' when free nucleons bind into a nucleus, given by the difference between the total mass of separate nucleons and the actual nuclear mass.

Definition

When ZZ protons and (A−Z)(A-Z) neutrons combine to form a nucleus of mass number AA, the mass of the resulting nucleus is found to be less than the sum of the masses of its constituent free nucleons. This difference is called the mass defect, Δm\Delta m:

Δm=[Zmp+(A−Z)mn]−Mnucleus\Delta m = \big[Zm_p + (A-Z)m_n\big] - M_{nucleus}

where mpm_p=mass of a free proton, mnm_n=mass of a free neutron, MnucleusM_{nucleus}=actual (measured) mass of the nucleus.
