Properties of cathode rays (any two)
-
Travel in straight lines. Cathode rays travel in straight lines perpendicular to the cathode surface, casting a sharp shadow of any opaque object placed in their path (demonstrated in a discharge tube with a Maltese-cross obstacle).
-
Negatively charged, deflected by fields. Cathode rays consist of a stream of negatively charged particles (electrons); they are deflected towards the positive plate in an electric field and follow the expected curved path in a magnetic field, consistent with negative charge (this was how J.J. Thomson determined the electron's charge-to-mass ratio).
