Lenz's law states that the direction of an induced EMF (and the resulting induced current) is always such that it opposes the very change in magnetic flux that produces it. Consider why this must be so: if the induced current instead aided the change (say, by attracting a magnet further into a coil rather than repelling it), the change would accelerate itself with no external work being supplied, effectively creating energy out of nothing — a violation of the conservation of energy.
