Since magnetic flux is Φ=BAcos⁡θ\Phi=BA\cos\theta, an emf can be induced by changing any one of the three factors: the field B, the enclosed area A, or the orientation angle θ.

Ways of producing induced emf

Since the flux through a coil is Φ=BAcos⁡θ\Phi=BA\cos\theta, an emf ε=−dΦ/dt\varepsilon=-d\Phi/dt can be induced by changing any of the three quantities on which flux depends:

  1. By changing the magnetic field B -- e.g. moving a magnet toward/away from a stationary coil, or varying the current in a nearby coil (mutual induction), changing B while A and θ stay fixed.

  2. By changing the area A -- e.g. sliding a conducting rod along rails in a magnetic field, changing the enclosed area of the circuit (motional emf).
