Step 2. With the field directed into the page and perpendicular to the loop's plane throughout, a smaller enclosed area means a smaller (decreasing) magnetic flux linked with the loop as it is crushed.
Step 3. By Lenz's law, the induced current opposes this decrease in (into-the-page) flux, so it flows in whatever sense creates its own magnetic field pointing FURTHER INTO the page inside the loop, reinforcing the existing field. …
