Define transgenesis: it is the deliberate introduction of extra, foreign DNA — the transgene — into an animal's genome, done so that the resulting trait is stable and heritable, passed on to the animal's offspring. Step 2. Define the resulting animal: a transgenic animal (also called a genetically modified or genetically engineered organism) is one whose genome has been altered this way, carrying and expressing the inserted gene throughout its cells. Step 3. List the species the chapter names as having actually been made transgenic: mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, cows, goats, sheep and fish. Step 4.
