The root's absolute growth rate is 2 cm per day, while its relative growth rate — the increase expressed against its own starting length — is 2.8 times the initial length over the week.

Growth rate can be measured in two complementary ways: the absolute growth rate looks only at the total increase over time, while the relative growth rate expresses that same increase on a common basis, typically per unit of the initial value, so that structures of very different starting sizes can be fairly compared.
