Every one of the five plant growth regulators was discovered by accident during an investigation of something else — a pattern usually called serendipity.

The discovery of each of the five major groups of plant growth regulators has indeed been accidental, in every case arising from an observation made for some other reason:

  • Auxin emerged from Charles and Francis Darwin's study of phototropism in canary grass coleoptiles, not a deliberate search for a growth hormone.
  • Gibberellins were found through E. Kurosawa's 1926 investigation of the bakanae ("foolish seedling") disease of rice, caused by the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi — treating healthy seedlings with sterile filtrates of the fungus reproduced the disease's symptoms, showing that a chemical substance, later identified as gibberellic acid, was responsible.
  • Cytokinins were discovered while F. Skoog and colleagues were trying to get tobacco stem callus to proliferate in culture, finding that it needed a supplement such as coconut milk or DNA in addition to auxin.
  • Abscisic acid was independently identified by three separate research groups studying different inhibitor substances (inhibitor-B, abscission II and dormin) that turned out to be chemically identical. …
