Henbane and spinach are long-day plants; Xanthium, rice, strawberry and Bryophyllum are short-day plants; sunflower, tomato and maize are day-neutral.

The three photoperiodic categories are defined by how a plant's flowering depends on day length relative to a species-specific critical duration:

  • Long-Day Plants (LDP) flower only once the day length exceeds their critical duration — they are the plants of late spring and summer, as days lengthen.
  • Short-Day Plants (SDP) flower only once the day length falls below their critical duration — they are the plants of autumn and winter, as days shorten.
  • Day-Neutral Plants (DNP) flower once they reach the right stage of vegetative growth, independent of day length altogether.
