- Maximum growth phase. Along a root axis, growth passes through the meristematic, elongation and maturation phases. It is the elongation phase that shows the fastest, maximum increase in size, driven by rapid vacuolation, cell enlargement and continuous new cell-wall deposition.
- Cause of apical dominance. The apical bud's suppression of the lateral buds below it is attributed to the apical bud carrying a higher concentration of auxin than the lateral buds; removing the apex removes this suppressing source and releases the lateral buds to grow out.
- Hormone that initiates rooting. Auxin is the hormone that helps initiate rooting, a property that is widely applied in plant propagation to encourage stem cuttings to develop their own root systems. …
