First aid is the immediate, temporary care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly taken ill. It is not a substitute for a doctor — it is the crucial bridge between the moment of crisis and the arrival of proper medical help. Every action a first aider takes is guided by a small number of clear objectives, and two of them take priority over everything else.
1. To preserve life
Preserving life is the first and most fundamental objective. In practice this means checking and maintaining the victim's airway, breathing and circulation — the ABC of first aid. If someone is choking, the airway must be cleared; if breathing has stopped, rescue breaths and chest compressions (CPR) must be started; if there is heavy bleeding, firm direct pressure is applied at once. Without these steps the victim can die within minutes, so every other objective is secondary to this one.
