If a person stops breathing or their heart stops, no amount of preventing deterioration or promoting recovery will matter unless life is sustained first.

Once life is secured, the focus shifts to preventing the condition from worsening — for example, controlling bleeding, immobilising a fracture, or preventing shock. Only after stabilisation does promoting recovery come into play, through reassurance, comfort, and arranging transport to medical care.

This priority order reflects the reality of emergency situations: you cannot treat a wound if the person is not breathing, and you cannot promote healing if the injury is actively deteriorating.
