PRICE stands for Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation — a first-aid protocol for acute soft-tissue injuries; Elevation reduces swelling by using gravity to drain fluid away from the injured site.

The PRICE Acronym

PRICE is a systematic immediate-care protocol used in the first 48–72 hours after an acute soft-tissue injury such as a sprain, strain, or contusion. Each letter represents a step that works together to minimize tissue damage, control inflammation, and speed recovery.

P – Protection

Protect the injured area from further harm. This might mean using a splint, brace, or simply avoiding movement that stresses the injury. The goal is to prevent additional trauma while the tissue begins to heal.

R – Rest

Rest the injured part to avoid aggravating the damage. Continued activity can worsen bleeding, swelling, and pain. Rest does not mean complete immobility for weeks, but rather avoiding the specific movements or loads that caused the injury until acute symptoms subside.

I – Ice

Apply ice (or a cold pack) to the injured area for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours during the first 48 hours. Cold constricts blood vessels (vasoconstriction), which reduces bleeding into the tissues, numbs pain, and slows the metabolic rate of cells, limiting secondary tissue damage from hypoxia.

Watch out

Never apply ice directly to skin — always wrap it in a thin towel to prevent ice burns.

C – Compression

Wrap the injury with an elastic bandage to apply gentle, even pressure. Compression mechanically limits the space available for fluid to accumulate, thereby controlling swelling. The wrap should be snug but not so tight that it cuts off circulation (check for numbness, tingling, or color change beyond the wrap).

E – Elevation

Raise the injured limb above the level of the heart whenever possible, especially during rest and sleep.
