Stanley Miller's 1953 experiment (with Harold Urey) experimentally simulated the probable conditions of primitive earth in the laboratory and showed that simple organic molecules, including amino acids, could form spontaneously from inorganic gases.

Miller created an experimental apparatus to simulate the conditions believed to have existed on early (primitive) earth - a reducing atmosphere containing ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), hydrogen gas (H2), and water vapour (H2O) - sealed in a closed flask kept at about 800°C. He then subjected this gas mixture to a continuous electric spark discharge (simulating lightning) for about a week.
