A Wheatstone bridge balances when AB/BC = AD/DC. Using the transcribed arm values this gives R = -4 ohm, which is not physically possible, so the printed values do not yield a positive unknown resistance.

Balanced Wheatstone bridge:

When the galvanometer between B and D shows no deflection (balance), no current flows through it, and the ratio of resistances in the two arms is equal:

AB/BC = AD/DC.

Step 1 - Data from figure: AB = 20 ohm, BC = 10 ohm, AD = 6 + R (the 6 ohm arm in series with R), DC = 1 ohm.

Step 2 - Apply balance: 20/10 = (6 + R)/1.

Step 3 - Solve: 2 = 6 + R => R = 2 - 6 = -4 ohm.
