An AC generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy by rotating a coil in a magnetic field, using slip rings and brushes to continuously connect the rotating coil to an external circuit.

Main parts and layout (to be drawn and labelled):

  1. Field magnet: strong permanent magnet or electromagnet (N and S poles) providing a uniform magnetic field B.
  2. Armature coil: a rectangular coil ABCD of many turns, wound on a soft-iron core, mounted on an axle so it can be mechanically rotated within the field.
  3. Slip rings: two continuous metal rings, R1 and R2, fixed to the rotating axle, each connected to one end of the coil; they rotate along with the coil.
  4. Brushes: two stationary carbon/graphite brushes, B1 and B2, that press lightly against the slip rings, providing sliding contact to the fixed external circuit.
  5. External circuit: the load (e.g. a resistor/lamp) connected across the brushes, through which the generated alternating current flows. …
