The nuclear (strong) force that binds protons and neutrons together in a nucleus has several distinctive features not shared by gravity or the electromagnetic force.

Features of the nuclear force (any three, from the following):

  1. Short range: it acts only over nuclear distances, roughly 1–3 femtometres (fm); beyond about 3–4 fm it falls off essentially to zero — unlike gravity or the Coulomb force, which act over all distances.
  2. Very strong (strongest known force at this range): at typical nucleon separations it is far stronger than the electrostatic repulsion between protons, which is why it can hold together a nucleus full of mutually repelling protons.
  3. Charge independence: the force between any pair of nucleons — proton–proton, neutron–neutron, or proton–neutron — is approximately the same, i.e. it does not depend on the electric charge of the nucleons. …
