Fission splits a heavy nucleus apart; fusion joins light nuclei together — both release energy because the products are more tightly bound (higher binding energy per nucleon) than the reactants.

a) Nuclear fission: The process in which a heavy unstable nucleus (such as U-235), typically after absorbing a neutron, splits into two lighter nuclei of comparable mass, releasing a large amount of energy along with a few neutrons (which can trigger further fissions — a chain reaction). This is the principle behind nuclear reactors and fission (atomic) bombs.

b) Nuclear fusion: The process in which two light nuclei (such as isotopes of hydrogen) combine at extremely high temperature and pressure to form a single heavier nucleus, releasing an enormous amount of energy. This is the process that powers the sun and other stars, and fusion (hydrogen) bombs.
