Worked Examples · Example 21

Q.In a survey of 60 people, it was found that 25 people read newspaper H; 26 read newspaper T, 26 read newspaper I, 9 read both H and I, 11 read both H and T, 8 read both T and I and, 3 read all three newspapers. Find:

(i) the number of people who read atleast one of the newspapers.
(ii) the number of people who read exactly one newspaper.

Use the three-set union (inclusion-exclusion) formula for the total, then subtract pairwise/triple overlaps to isolate "exactly one" for each newspaper.

n(H∪T∪I)=n(H)+n(T)+n(I)−n(H∩T)−n(T∩I)−n(H∩I)+n(H∩T∩I)n(H\cup T\cup I)=n(H)+n(T)+n(I)-n(H\cap T)-n(T\cap I)-n(H\cap I)+n(H\cap T\cap I). Exactly-one-region for HH = n(H)−n(H∩T)−n(H∩I)+n(H∩T∩I)n(H)-n(H\cap T)-n(H\cap I)+n(H\cap T\cap I) (and similarly for TT, II).

  1. Given: n(H)=25n(H)=25, n(T)=26n(T)=26, n(I)=26n(I)=26, n(H∩I)=9n(H\cap I)=9, n(H∩T)=11n(H\cap T)=11, n(T∩I)=8n(T\cap I)=8, n(H∩T∩I)=3n(H\cap T\cap I)=3 (60 people surveyed).
  2. (i) At least one newspaper: n(H∪T∪I)=25+26+26−11−8−9+3n(H\cup T\cup I)=25+26+26-11-8-9+3 =77−28+3=52=77-28+3=52.
  3. (ii) Exactly one newspaper. First find each pairwise-only region (excluding the triple overlap):
    • H∩TH\cap T only (not II) =n(H∩T)−n(H∩T∩I)=11−3=8=n(H\cap T)-n(H\cap T\cap I)=11-3=8.
    • H∩IH\cap I only (not TT) =n(H∩I)−n(H∩T∩I)=9−3=6=n(H\cap I)-n(H\cap T\cap I)=9-3=6.
    • T∩IT\cap I only (not HH) =n(T∩I)−n(H∩T∩I)=8−3=5=n(T\cap I)-n(H\cap T\cap I)=8-3=5.
  4. Now find each "only" region:
    • Only H=n(H)−(H∩T only)−(H∩I only)−n(H∩T∩I)=25−8−6−3=8H=n(H)-(H\cap T\text{ only})-(H\cap I\text{ only})-n(H\cap T\cap I)=25-8-6-3=8. …
