Over recent decades the primary (agriculture) sector's share of the workforce has fallen while the secondary (industry) and tertiary (services) shares have risen. Agriculture is still the biggest employer, but the workforce is steadily moving towards industry and services.

Concept first

The workforce is divided across three sectors — primary (agriculture and allied), secondary (manufacturing, construction), and tertiary (trade, transport, communication, services). Studying how their shares change over time shows the direction in which the economy is developing.

Recent trends

  • Primary sector (agriculture): Its share of the workforce has been falling gradually, though it still employs the largest proportion of people. This means the economy remains dependent on agriculture for jobs, but less than before.
  • Secondary sector (industry): Its share has risen, as manufacturing and construction absorb more workers.
  • Tertiary sector (services): Its share has grown the most, because trade, transport, communication, finance and other services have expanded rapidly and generate most new jobs.
