This is an activity to list your family's consumption. Group the items the way a CPI does — food, fuel & lighting, housing, clothing, and miscellaneous — noting that food generally takes the biggest share of a household budget.

How to list them (a model answer)

List the goods and services your family regularly buys and group them the way a Consumer Price Index does. A representative list:

  • Food — cereals (rice, wheat), pulses (dal), vegetables and fruit, milk and dairy, edible oil, sugar, spices. (Usually the largest share.)
  • Fuel & lighting — cooking gas (LPG), electricity.
  • Housing / rent — house rent or maintenance.
  • Clothing & footwear — clothes, footwear.
  • Miscellaneous — transport (fuel, bus/train fare), education (fees, books, stationery), medical/medicines, mobile and internet, entertainment, household services. …
