The synaptonemal complex is a temporary protein scaffold that holds paired homologous chromosomes together in early meiosis, while the metaphase plate is the equatorial alignment line chromosomes occupy just before being pulled apart.

a. Synaptonemal complex. During zygotene, the first stage of meiotic prophase I in which chromosome pairing genuinely begins, homologous chromosomes come together side by side in a process called synapsis. This pairing is accompanied by the assembly of an elaborate protein structure between the two paired partners, known as the synaptonemal complex. The pair of synapsed homologous chromosomes held together by this structure is called a bivalent, or tetrad. The synaptonemal complex persists through pachytene, the stage during which crossing over occurs at recombination nodules along the paired chromosomes, and it is only with the start of diplotene that the complex breaks down, allowing the (now recombined) homologues to begin moving apart, held together only at the chiasmata that mark where crossing over took place. …
