Ch 1Solutions — Class 12 Chemistry, concept-first.
Truly pure substances are rare in everyday life. Almost everything around us — the air we breathe, the water we drink, the alloys in our coins and jewellery — is a mixture of two or more pure substances, and how useful or how dangerous that mixture is often depends entirely on the proportion of each ingredient present.

Types of Solutions
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components. "Homogeneous" means the composition and every property of the mixture are uniform throughout — wherever you sample it, it looks and behav…
Expressing Concentration of Solutions

Solubility
The solubility of a substance is the maximum quantity of it that can be dissolved in a fixed amount of a particular solvent at a stated temperature (and, for gases, a stated pressure).
Solubility of a Solid in a Liquid
Not every solid dissolves in every liquid. Common salt and sugar dissolve freely in water, yet naphthalene and anthracene barely dissolve in it at all.
Solubility of a Gas in a Liquid
3 QMany gases dissolve in liquids, though to very different extents. Oxygen dissolves in water only slightly — yet that small amount of dissolved oxygen is what supports all aquatic life.

+−Intext Questions 1.6-1.7i2 questions
Vapour Pressure of Liquid Solutions
A liquid solution is one in which the solvent is a liquid. The solute that dissolves in it can be a gas, another liquid, or a solid — so liquid solutions cover a wide range of everyday mixtures.
Vapour Pressure of Liquid-Liquid Solutions
Consider a binary solution of two volatile liquids, labelled component 1 and component 2. When this solution is kept in a closed vessel, both liquids evaporate.
Raoult's Law as a Special Case of Henry's Law
Two laws met earlier turn out to be closely related. Placing them side by side reveals that one is simply a special case of the other.
Vapour Pressure of Solutions of Solids in Liquids
A large and important class of solutions is made of solids dissolved in liquids — sodium chloride, glucose, urea and cane sugar dissolved in water, or iodine and sulphur dissolved in carbon disulphide…
Ideal and Non-ideal Solutions
Once we know how each liquid contributes its vapour pressure through Raoult's law, we can use that law as a test for how a real liquid-liquid mixture behaves.
Ideal Solutions
A solution that obeys Raoult's law over the whole range of concentration — from pure component A right through to pure component B — is called an ideal solution.
Non-ideal Solutions
When a solution fails to obey Raoult's law over the entire range of concentration, it is called a non-ideal solution.
Colligative Properties and Determination of Molar Mass
When a non-volatile solute is dissolved in a volatile solvent, the vapour pressure of the solvent falls (as established in the study of vapour pressure of solid-in-liquid solutions).
Relative Lowering of Vapour Pressure
The vapour pressure of a solvent in a solution is always less than that of the pure solvent. Raoult found that this lowering depends only on the concentration of the solute particles and not on their…
Elevation of Boiling Point
A liquid boils at the temperature where its vapour pressure becomes equal to the surrounding atmospheric pressure.
+−Worked Examplesi2 questions

Osmosis and Osmotic Pressure
Many everyday observations share a hidden common cause: raw mangoes shrivel when pickled in brine, wilted flowers revive in fresh water, and blood cells collapse in saline water.
Reverse Osmosis and Water Purification
In ordinary osmosis, solvent flows into a solution across a semipermeable membrane. This direction can be turned around.
