Capnophilic bacteria are bacteria that grow best in an atmosphere enriched with extra carbon dioxide.

Bacteria can be classified by their gas requirements for growth. While normal atmospheric air contains only about 0.04% CO2, some bacteria - called capnophilic (from Greek 'capnos', meaning smoke/CO2, and 'philic', meaning loving) - grow poorly or not at all at this low CO2 level and instead require an elevated CO2 concentration (typically around 5-10%) in their incubation atmosphere for good growth.
