Cycas (Class Cycadopsida) is a slow-growing, palm-like, dioecious, evergreen gymnosperm. Besides a persistent tap root, it produces dichotomously branching coralloid roots that host the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Anabaena in their cortex. It bears two leaf types — large pinnately compound foliage leaves and small protective scale leaves — and is heterosporous: the male cone, borne at the stem tip, carries spirally arranged microsporophylls each bearing thousands of microsporangia in sori; the megasporophylls, by contrast, are not organised into a cone at all, occurring instead as a loose spiral bearing ovules along their margins.
