Ascomycetes form four structurally distinct types of fruiting bodies (ascocarps): the fully-closed cleistothecium, the flask-shaped perithecium with a pore, the open cup-shaped apothecium, and the stroma-embedded pseudothecium.

In Ascomycetes ('sac fungi'), the sexual spores (ascospores) are produced inside sac-like structures called asci, and the asci themselves are enclosed within (or borne upon) a specialised fruiting body called the ascocarp. Ascocarps are classified into four principal types based on their shape and how open they are to the outside:

  1. Cleistothecium — a completely closed, spherical ascocarp with no natural opening; the asci are released only when the wall ruptures or decays (e.g. in Penicillium, Aspergillus in its sexual state).
  2. Perithecium — a flask- or bottle-shaped ascocarp with a small opening (ostiole) at the top, through which mature ascospores are released (e.g. Neurospora). …
