Gymnosperm endosperm is the haploid female gametophyte tissue, and it is already present in the ovule before fertilization even takes place.

In angiosperms, the endosperm is a post-fertilization product: it forms only after a male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei of the central cell (triple fusion), making it triploid (3n) and produced after fertilization.

Gymnosperms are different. In a gymnosperm ovule, the megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis and the surviving haploid megaspore develops, well before fertilization, into a multicellular female gametophyte that fills most of the ovule. This female gametophyte tissue itself acts as the nutritive tissue for the developing embryo and is conventionally called the (gymnosperm) endosperm.
