Construction of floral diagram and floral formula

A floral formula is a compact way of writing down a flower's key features using a standard set of symbols, while a floral diagram is a schematic drawing of the flower's cross section as it would appear viewed from directly above, with the different floral whorls shown as concentric rings. Together they record the number and arrangement of bracts, bracteoles and floral parts, how those parts fuse or overlap, and the type of placentation. The branch that bears the flower is called the mother axis; on the flower itself, the side facing this mother axis is the posterior side, and the side facing the subtending bract is the anterior side. The formula uses letters for each whorl - K for calyx, C for corolla (or P for an undifferentiated perianth), A for androecium and G for gynoecium - each followed by a number for how many members are present; a number in brackets shows the members are fused (e.g. K(5) = five fused sepals) while a plain number shows they are free (K5 = five free sepals); a plus sign separates members in different whorls or of different kinds (e.g. C1+2+2 for an irregular corolla, A5+5 for two whorls of five stamens each); a bar under G shows a superior ovary and a bar over G shows an inferior ovary; Br/Ebr mark a flower as bracteate/ebracteate and Brl/Eb …

What this figure shows. Six paired floral-diagram-and-formula panels, each showing a schematic cross-section of the flower's whorls as concentric rings alongside its written formula: (a) Hibiscus rosa-sinensis - Br Brl K(5) C5 A(infinity) G(5). (b) Brassica compestris - Br Ebrl P3+3 A0 G(3). (c) Crotalaria juncea - Br Ebrl K(5) C1+2+(2) A5+5 G-(1). (d) Ixora coccinea - Br Brl K(4) C(4) A4 G(2). (e) Phyllanthus amarus - a paired diagram of a labelled male flower and female flower, with formulae Br Brl P3+3 A(3) G0 (male) and Br Brl P(3)+3 A3+3 G0 (female, as printed). (f) Cocos nucifera - a paired diagram of a labelled male flower and female flower, with …
