Significance of Seeds

Seeds matter to the plant and to us in several distinct ways. A seed encloses and protects the embryo that will grow into the next generation. It contains food reserves that support the embryo's development. It is the plant's chief means of dispersing new individuals to new locations. It allows a species to persist through unfavourable conditions - a seed can lie dormant and then germinate once suitable conditions return.
