Hybridisation is the mixing of atomic orbitals on an atom to produce new equivalent orbitals that explain the actual observed shape/geometry of a molecule.

According to valence bond theory, when an atom forms bonds, its atomic orbitals (such as s, p, d) of comparable/slightly different energy on the same atom intermix (hybridise) to produce an equal number of new orbitals, called hybrid orbitals, which are identical to one another in shape and energy. These hybrid orbitals are oriented in space in specific directions that minimise electron-pair repulsion, giving the molecule its characteristic geometry.
